I'm on duty at the Academy this weekend, so some of my weekend will be occupied working in the gym and the student center. Also, I'm carrying the emergency transportation phone. Here's hoping it never rings.
Several new chapbooks arrived in the mail last week from Greying Ghost, and I'm anxious to spend a bit of time with them. Of course, finding that time amid the grading and preparing for next week is a challenge, but I'm looking forward to at least a little while spent reading them, especially Andrew Terhune's Helen Mirren Picks Out my Clothes and Kathryn Regina's I Am in the Air Right Now.
The second week of my poetry class went well. This semester (unlike last), I have a group of students who are willing to engage in discussion about poems, even when they admit to feeling a bit out of place doing so. The class has gotten a bit large--we're up to sixteen--but we'll find a way to manage the size, I think, as long as everybody stays engaged. And if the rumors hold true, there are at least a couple of students who have heard about the class and intend to join on Tuesday.
Also, it's worth mentioning their villanelles. We spent the first week doing little, mostly talking about the idea of a creative writing class and what it means (in practical terms) to take a class in poetry. The second week, we read villanelles, with drafts due on Friday, and I think that these may be, collectively, the best group of beginning-of-term drafts I've seen from first-time poets.
More on that later, I hope.
