Current Rotation

Here's what I'm listening to...

1. Manchester Orchestra, Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind (2008)
This new EP from Andy, Jeremiah, and the gang will give you enough to remain convinced of their brilliance but also leave you wanting more.

Specifically, it'll leave you wanting the new LP they're recording right now.

2. The Mountain Goats, Satanic Messiah (2008)
John Darnielle's new EP doesn't have that "produced" feel that some of his recent albums have had--notably, Tallahassee. It also doesn't have that scratchy, recorded-on-a-Panasonic-cassette-deck feel of some of his earlier stuff. Instead, it strikes a fine balance with tracks that have clarity and simplicity.

Darnielle is offering the EP as a free download, or for whatever donation you'd like to send his way.
3. Inkwell, These Stars Are Monsters (2006)
I've been to two Inkwell shows in the last month or so, and I'll probably go to their show at the Social in November, too. Travis, the band's front man, is a remarkable lyricist and performer, so much so that it more than makes up for the growing pains the band seems to be in the midst of. They have a new guitar player whose first live performance was last Thursday, and while her guitar playing was plenty compatible with the rest of the band, her vocals--especially on the band's earlier songs--sounded out of place (which is perhaps to be expected) and pitchy (which is not).

At their show last Thursday at the Social, the performances of the new songs sounded in many ways better than the performances of songs from their two earlier albums. I hope that means that their new LP will be as good as I hope.
